While oil tanks can last between 10-20 years, it is important that you understand the signs that indicate you should invest in a new tank. If you ignore these signs, you may face numerous problems from spills and stains to even tank failure. If you notice any of these indicators, contact us here at North Jersey Excavation as soon as possible before the problem worsens:
Rust - If you spot any signs of corrosion, like rust, on the exterior of the tank, there may be an issue with your oil tank. Since you can see the rust on the outside of the tank, there is likely corrosion also on the inside and odds are, it is much worse. Contact us as soon as you notice the rust to see if the tank is in any way salvageable or if it needs to be replaced completely.
Wet Spots or Other Indicators of Leaking - If you notice wet spots or any other signs of leaking, such as a lingering oil odor, it could mean that your tank has a crack or multiple cracks in it. While they may be tiny cracks, this is another sign that your tank could be corroding from the inside and might need to be replaced.
Vent Pipe Clogs - If you realize that your oil tank is running inefficiently, it might be because its vent pipes are clogged. If they seem to constantly be clogged, it might be yet another sign of corrosion. While it could also be due to things such as snow or ice that we experience with New Jersey winters or even poor insulation, it is best that you get us out to inspect the tank and evaluate the issue.
Unstable Legs - A lot of the times, an indicator of the tank's overall condition is the condition of the legs. If the legs are unstable and or weak, it could be the result of a poor installation and ultimately, it can affect the efficiency of the tank. It may be possible to just replace the legs of the tank, but sometimes it is better just to replace the oil tank completely.
Age - If you realize your tank is getting older, it may be time that you get it evaluated by a professional. Even though tanks can last for many years, it is oftentimes better to get ahead of the situation and get it replaced before its problems cause you more money in damages. If your tank is around the 10-year-old mark, contact us so that we can inspect your tank and go over your options.
